“HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?” She wondered aloud for perhaps the twentieth time in as many centons. Never in her wildest dreams could she have imagined Walther could somehow have been spirited away from earth in the same fashion as she. Bowdee had recovered his poise much sooner and had retrieved a container of hydration for her, which she sipped at distractedly.

“Tell me again how you came to know him?” Bowdee queried gently. Rhonda started to explain for the third time about their past but was again lost in reverie within the first ten words. It was finally Tess who got through to her.

“Rhonda, would you like to go to where Walther lives now, perhaps to reunite with him, if Master has no objections?” She knew it was presumptuous of her to suggest, even to do the research without command, but she didn’t care. She was a female on a mission.

Bowdee, shaking his head as if awakening from a bad dream, addressed Tess. “What did you just say?” He demanded. “Who directed you to perform any search and who directed you to listen in on our conversations?” Rising to the event, Bowdee bristled as he continued. “You are well outside your directives in your actions, computer. I direct you to reduce your awareness to minimum requirements for security of both vessels until I decide whether to reboot or purge you.”

“No!” Rhonda exploded. Bowdee whirled on her, expecting to see the still disheartened young woman, but instead coming face-to-face with a warrior maiden.

“I realize I owe you more than I can ever consider repaying but you can’t fault Tess for any of this. Bowdee, believe me, had I not already mated and bonded with Walther, I would consider it an honor and a privilege to contract with you. I recognize any female would be foolish to turn down all you have to offer, but my course is set and I must ask your support yet again.” Pausing for breath when he did not rebuff on her, Rhonda continued.

“I will work for you for however long you feel is adequate to repay your generosity and will agree to contract should Walther no longer be interested in me as his mate. But to do so I must ask you to sell me, on credit I don’t have, the Lilapso in which Tess is contained. She has been more like a sister to me than anyone or anything I’ve ever known. I can’t imagine living without her.” She smiled unabashedly at his startled expression before continuing. “Besides; I could never find him without her.”

She knew she might be cutting her own throat. If he chose to deny her request, he could purge Tess and any chance she might have of finding Walther and keep both vessels to boot. He slowly, almost cautiously, walked up to her and lowered his face to hers. Pressing his lips to hers softly, he held the kiss for exactly two seconds before stepping back.

“By Galactic Law, it is I who owe you the debt of my life.
